Mineral wool is non-combustible. But when mineral wool is installed between the rafters of a pitched roof, does it necessarily prevent a fire originating above the roof, beneath a photovoltaic installation, from developing into a structural roof fire?
Our continued work on PV fire incidents and our own full-scale fire testing have led us to look more closely at this question.
The issue is not the fire performance of mineral wool itself.
The issue may be where the non-combustible material is positioned relative to the fire.

The albedo effect refers to the ability of a surface to reflect sunlight. For bifacial solar panels, which generate energy from both the front and back sides, this reflectivity can significantly impact performance.
By increasing the amount of light reflected onto the rear side of the PV modules, high-albedo surfaces can boost total energy output especially during summer months when solar exposure is highest.
