Research & Engineering

Bridgehill Engineering Lab
FireBlock is a fire-resistant roof membrane engineered for solar PV systems and modern roofing structures developed by Bridgehill’s R&D team. Suitable for both flat and pitched roofs, it can be installed above or below the waterproofing layer in new builds or solar retrofits. When exposed to high heat, the membrane expands to form an active fire barrier that helps block flames, radiant heat, and airborne embers. This protects insulation and structural components beneath rooftop solar installations. FireBlock provides solar installers, roofing contractors, and engineers with a practical solution for improved roof fire protection, wildfire resilience, and fire safety compliance.

Non-combustible insulation. But is the roof protected?
Mineral wool is widely used for fire protection and is classified as non-combustible. But when installed between the rafters of a pitched roof, does it provide sufficient protection against a fire originating beneath a PV installation? Drawing on full-scale fire testing and our work with PV fire incidents, we examine how fire can develop within the roof structure – and why the position of non-combustible materials may be just as important as their fire classification.
Can mineral wool stop a PV roof fire?

How much does the Albedo effect matter for solar energy production?
Surface reflectivity, known as the albedo effect, can significantly impact solar panel performance, especially for bifacial PV systems. Research from NTNU, international studies, and Bridgehill Engineering Lab shows that reflective surfaces can increase annual energy yield by up to 10–20%. This article explains how the albedo effect works, how it influences bifacial solar modules, and why surface reflectivity is key to optimizing system design, efficiency, and return on investment.
